A warm outlet cover, flickering lights, or a breaker that trips without an obvious reason can turn a wiring question into a safety issue fast. When homeowners ask about copper vs aluminum wiring, the right answer is not that one material is always good and the other is always bad. The age of the installation, the wire size, the connected load, and the condition of every termination matter.
Copper remains the standard choice for most residential branch circuits. Aluminum is also widely and safely used in the right applications, especially for larger service conductors and feeders. The trouble usually starts when older aluminum branch-circuit wiring or improper connections are left uninspected.
Copper vs Aluminum Wiring: The Main Difference
Both copper and aluminum carry electrical current, but copper is a better conductor. That means aluminum conductors generally need to be larger than copper conductors to carry the same electrical load safely. A qualified electrician accounts for that difference when sizing a circuit, feeder, or electrical service.
